Hello!

Hoy hablaremos de nuestras aventuras por la maravillosa ciudad de Groningen o Groninga. Yepeee! Groningen es famosa por ser la ciudad de estudiantes más chachi de Nederland. Está al Norte, Norte, Norte, más allá del Muro, lo que en escala holandesa se traduce por "a dos horas y pico de Arnhem".

Decidimos ir a Groningen de post-exámenes, coincidiendo con el fin de semana más frío del año y parte del otro. Tras tres trenes llegamos allí dispuestas a darlo todo.


Today, we are talking about our adventures in the wonderful city of Groningen or Groninga. Yepeee! Groningen is well-known because it is the greatest student city of Netherlands. It is in the North, North, North, beyond the Wall, what in Ducth scale means "2h and a bit from Arnhem".
We decided to go to Groningen after exams. Those days were the coldest we have had, that was really nice. After three trains, we arrived there ready to rock it. 

Nos alojamos en el hostel Budget Hostel, muy recomendable. De la ciudad no hay mucho que contar, es una ciudad bonica, parecida al resto de ciudades holandesas en la que la media de edad de la población es de veintipico años, por lo que vimos, así que la fiesta allí es considerable. Además, su mayor monumento es la Martinitoren, que no es una torre de Martini, sino una torre a secas, que en su momento fue la más alta de Europa.

We stayed in the Budget Hostel, I totally recommend it. There is not too much to tell about the city, it is a beautiful city, similar to the rest of Dutch cities, whose population has an average age of twentysomething, as we could see, so, there is quite party there. Besides that, its major monument is the Martinitoren, which is not a Martini tower, but a normal one. In its time was the tallest of Europe.

En esa misma torre había un reloj, pero no un reloj cualquiera, sino un reloj solar. Si, un reloj solar, si, en un país en el que los días soleados abundan tanto como la paella. Mi conclusión es que fue una moda, y el Señor de Groningen del momento no quería quedarse out. Podemos encontrar una analogía entre poner relojes solares en ciudades de Nederland y la moda de usar gafas de pasta sin graduar.

In that same tower there was a clock, but not a normal one, but a sundial. Exactly, a sundial, yes, in a country where sunny days are so common as paella. My conclusion is that it was the style and the Lord of Groningen of the moment didn't want to be out. We can find an analogy between installing sundials in Netherlands and the fashion of using ungraded horn-rimmed glasses.

En cuanto a la comida, aprovecho esta entrada para presentaros uno de los platos nacionales: el tosti. No es más que un sandwich tostado, pero como el queso de aquí está tó bueno, bien hecho es guay. El básico más molón es tomate, queso y pesto. Como íbamos de pobres es lo máximo que nos podíamos permitir de restaurante.

Regarding the food, I present you one of the national dishes: the tosti. It is just a toasted sandwich, but since the Dutch cheese is really good, when it is well done it is really nice. My favorite is made with tomato, cheese and pesto. As we are poor, it was the biggest thing we could afford in a restaurant.

La vuelta fue otro cantar. Os recerdo que Groningen-Arnhem son algo más de dos horas y tres trenes de recorrido. Bien, el día que nosotras volvíamos había premio y ganamos. Seis horas, siete trenes y un autobús más tarde llegábamos a casa, donde estaban los nuevos. El segundo semestre había comenzado...

The return was another story. I remind you that Groningen-Arnhem is a little bit more than two hours and three trains. Well, that day we were lucky, we won the price. Six hours, seven trains and one bus later we arrived to home, where the new people were. The second semester had begun...
